Peer Review: Operant Conditioning in Musical Education

Hello pod 5! Below is my peer review of your interactive learning resource ‘Operant Conditioning in Musical Education’!

Here is the link to the resource: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r-YkdU6nazNyuAQYHeCibvC0qlvHbyiw6-ctk1cijxg/edit?usp=sharing

To begin, I liked your layout and how each of your descriptions and rationales was clearly labeled and all in one place. It made it very easy to navigate and go through each section!

Next, I appreciated how straightforward the beginning of your overview was. You very clearly outlined why you chose your topic and your goal for the ressource. I liked how you included your philosophy for the ressource at the end. Well done!

Additionally, I really enjoyed reading your description and rationale of learning theory. When you mentioned the relationship between operant conditioning and behavioral learning, it was very clear why you chose your theory and how it would benefit your ressource. I also liked how you defined behaviorism at the beginning, which provides more clarity to what your learning theory is.

As for your learning design, it seems to me that you are talking more about why direct instruction would aid in teaching orchestra, however it doesnā€™t seem to mention operant conditioning till later. I would recommend restructuring the beginning or the rationale to include why direct instruction is beneficial when teaching about an idea such as operant conditioning and then perhaps move why it is relevant in orchestra to further down. This would clarify why your chosen learning design benefits your topic.

Continuing on, I believe that your description of your learning context is strong, and I appreciated how you explained why you chose your context while still keeping the section brief. I question however if you need to cite your second sentence ā€œBehaviorism focuses on linking a response or reflex to a stimulus through repetition and reinforcing desired behavior through rewards.ā€? You also might want to consider adding a citation to your last sentence of this section just to be safe.

I recommend to include a word other than ā€˜understandā€™ your learning outcome 3. This is simply because ā€˜understandā€™ is not assessable learning outcome language, as there is no real way to measure it. Instead, using words like explain or recognize would allow the outcome to be more precise and measurable, and would demonstrate understanding.

I may have missed something but I am unsure of where your descriptions about your topics are. You have clearly defined your activities, but donā€™t have descriptions of each topic that you mention in your assessment plan. This would greatly clarify which activity belongs to which topic and learning outcome, and would benefit the structure of your ressource. It would also provide a bit more clarity upfront on what each topic is. Further, I would recommend including the commentary about each activity in the same section as you defined the activities and to perhaps tie in your learning outcomes with your activities. I found myself having to do a lot of scrolling from description to activity to do them in order. Putting them in the same place would allow the reader to understand the activity immediately before completing it. Also, it would remove confusion that the activities you are commentating on are the same ones described in your interactive activity portion.

As for the activities themselves, in what way are activities 3 and 4 actually interactive? Interactive activities require student engagement with the material and will facilitate some sort of response. I may have missed something, but activities 3 and 4 appear to just be videos to watch, which is not technically interactive without some other aspect to the activities. Activities 1 and 2 were well done, and I liked how easy it was to understand what to do.

Next, your assessment plan was well organized and easy to follow. I like how you included both graded and ungraded assessments for each section, which ensure that the students become very engaged with the content. Following this, I would like a little more detail on your summative assessment. It appears as though you have included your summative assessment plans in your fourth unit, so I would appreciate some clarification on what the summative assessment is for the entire resource and what is the assessment for the section. I liked how you included your outcomes in each section of your assessment plan, as it clearly indicates which assessments will demonstrate which outcomes.

Finally, I really liked your designs for inclusion, and how you clearly outlined both actions and resources. I also liked how you included your diverse learner inclusion in your technology choices, and how the diverse learners’ situations would affect the technology use in your resource.

Overall, I enjoyed reading your resource and thought that most of it was very strong. I hope that my review helped provide useful feedback to your group! I apologize if it is a bit long, but I saw that I was the only one who signed up for your resource so I wanted to make sure that I gave you enough to address in your peer review section in case no one else signed up. Well done on your resource!
